KNOW YOUR KEY STRENGTHS

You have seen an ordinary camera. There were new innovations in cameras. The satellite camera is the powerful one, through which we can zoom to any city, locality, even the street.. The mankind was so creative we were able to invent satellite camera, but failed to identify what’s inside us, the stuff held inside a human mind. We do not know what is stock inside us. We do not know our talents.

Generally in all interviews, one of the frequently asked question (FAQ) is “What are your strengths ?”. Many candidates just look blank. Candidates are not sure about their talents and strengths. Sometime they answer with their subject knowledge to this question. They are not even trained to face such questions.

Our school/college curriculum has not helped us to identify our talents and build them into strengths. Once our education is completed, we are thrown open to face the society. Without equipping ourselves properly, we have to face the society, which is filled up with all sorts of people. If you know your strengths and weaknesses you can work on it and develop your skills to face the society and improve your personal life.

First you should know to identify your talents. Then only you can translate your talents into your personal success and career success. Businesspeople are yet to know, that their business success is directly related to their personal strengths and weaknesses. Success in a business depends upon whether a person can influence other people. Sales people need that talent.


In my training programs, I find people struggle to list out even three strengths. But we are clear in pointing out others’ weaknesses. This means, we have not yet started to look within us. We have not started finding ways to improve ourselves.

You should be able to define what is strength and relate it to, how it is going to help your life, to achieve everything.

Now, write down what you believe are your strong points: personality traits, life experiences, lessons learned. Are you able to write down atleast three ? In fact, every one of you must be having ten to twenty good qualities. Unless we analyse about ourselves, we may not be knowing these. Self appraisal is required now and then. Only in training programs, such appraisals are made, we are compelled to do so. Otherwise, we ourselves will not do at any point of time.

Here a list of strengths are given. Please go through it. If you find anything is fitting you, then add to your list.

Keeping Calm

Our life is neither a bed of roses nor a bed of thorns. We have to sail through difficult times now and then. How are we disturbed emotionally during those turbulent times ? Are we able to keep calm so that we can identify the problem and analyse the ways to solve it. If we are affected by emotional irritants, how will we behave. Hence, keeping calm is a good factor to be added to your strength list.

Good time management

Achievers have only twenty four hours per day. Non-achievers also have only twenty four hours a day. It all depends how the time is managed well. Time cannot be manipulated. Whether rich or poor, it is same for everybody. Are you good in time management ? How much you are spending on TV ? Every day, before you go to sleep, just calculate, how much time could have been better utilized on that day.

Smiling face:

If you cross check your friends, colleagues, relatives, you can identify such smiling people. Now find out how this factor is helping them. If you move with them for a day or so, you can find out, how they are well received in the society, how their presence is welcomed. Just check up with your friends, whether you are having smiling face always, if you find it difficult from the mirror.

Keeping good friendship:

Maintaining a healthy relationship with friends is one of the good qualities. We need not have hundreds of friends. But a close relationship with one or two will help you to ease out your tensions. How you maintain these friendships is the next question. Do you leak out everything to your close friends ? Nothing is left out ? That means you believe your friends. Do your friends hide out anything from you ? Then it means, they don’t have trust in you. If both have open minds, then it means you are maintaining a good friendship.


Helping others voluntarily:

You may say that you do help others. Do you help voluntarily or wait for the request to do so. When you help others in difficult times, that too voluntarily, it will take your image to sky level. People will be dedicated to you throughout their life time. Are we searching for such opportunities to help others ? Do you have that quality ?

Good planning:

If you plan everything, and then execute it, then probability of failing is less, when compared to doing something without any plans at all. Good planning will definitely help to lead a better life. Haphazard spending make people financially weak. Those people spend much of their time, trying to meet both ends. Then where is the way to improve life ? Plan your work and work your plan.

Keeping a goal

In earlier issues, we have seen, how important is to keep a goal in one’s life. Keeping a goal and working towards that, is a good strength of you. It will lead to success. Person who doesn’t have any goal in his life, his life will be static. He has to just envy about the others prospering.


Keep adding your strengths. Happy days are ahead !

Goal setting is all about what you want to become. We all have dreams. What could we do without dreams ? Dreams make us grow and go beyond our limits. Dreams inspire us to extend our limits. Convert your dreams into goals.

Why do so many of us never achieve our goal setting plans? Possibly because we never quite know, what we want or where we are going in life. Or if we do know what we want, we don’t really believe in our capability to achieve it. Goal setting can be taught to anyone who is willing to learn how to do it. However, that burning desire that comes from within – our belief in ourselves, will ultimately determine whether our goal setting plans will be achieved or not. To truly be successful, and reach your true potential, you must constantly push yourself to move outside of your “comfort zone”.

Goal setting is taking charge of your future

Goal Setting can be the beginning of an entire change of lifestyle. When someone has lived with a certain routine for an extended period of time, many things will never happen unless goals are set. Goal setting is the map to change one will need if a desired change is wanted or needed.

Benefits of Goal Setting:

1. You will have a clear blue print for your life and give you clear direction in all areas of your life
2. You channelise all your energies towards your goal
3. Goals give you a purpose in life ( a reason to get up early in the morning and go to bed at night)
4. When you are clear what you want in your life, there is no confusion of what to do.
5. When you fix a goal and work towards it, naturally you will search for information and help related to your goal.
6. With shorter period you will achieve goals, when compared to non setting of goals. When you don’t set goals, you may not achieve also.
7. Lot of money is saved. Otherwise, you will have to wander around what to do, when to do. While your money is spend, you may be achieving anything.. Money saved is equivalent to money earned.
8. Your precious time is saved. When you fix a goal and work towards it, you will attain in a shorted period. Hence, wastage of your time is avoided.
9. When you have clarity in goal, a lot of stress is avoided.
10. People with goal in their mind, expresses confidence.
11. Such persons create positive self image about themselves
12. They have positive focus of energy
13. Makes you aware of your strengths
14. Makes you aware of your weaknesses so you can begin to improve them and make them into strengths
15. Makes you responsible for your own success or failures
16. Serves as a guide in making decisions.
17. Defines real life actions, separates it from just wishful thinking
18. Improves your self image
19. Forces you to set priorities, therefore helping you to limit getting involved in distracted things.
20. Gives you a sense of past victories of goals accomplished and motivation to succeed in current goals.
21. Helps you to visualize and plan actions to achieve what you want, then carry out.
22. Gives you a track to run on, a path to follow, so you know where you are going.

Excuses for Not Setting Goals

Predictability
Many people feel threatened by change and resist goal setting because it may be uncomfortable to try something new or different.

Conditioning
Many people are conditioned so that after they have done something a certain way, it becomes a habit.

Belief in Miracles
Many people sit back and wait for miracles instead of setting goals and taking action to accomplish them.

Fear of Losing
Many people do not set goals because they are afraid they will be criticized for not reaching them.

Fear of Winning
Odd as it may seem, some people do not set goals because they cannot image themselves being capable of handling the new behavior or success.

Time Constraints
Many people think it takes too much time to set goals...think of the wasted time when you are .out in left field. doing things unrelated to your real purpose!
