GOAL SETTING II
You might have heard about pigeon racing. Trained pigeons will be released at a distant place from the original rearing place or home. Now races are being held to release the pigeons even as long as 1000 kms away from its nest. The pigeon will reach its home within four or five days time. In this racing, which pigeon will reach faster will be selected.
Pigeons have only one goal i.e. to reach the home, as early as possible, even when it is released 1000 kms away. There may be hundreds of obstacles in the enroute. Climatic conditions, chasing by vultures, etc may be there during the return journey. The pigeon also has to find food and take daily at different new places. Still, 99 % of the pigeons will reach home safely. What a tremendous power and focus these pigeons have. Do you think that we don’t have such powers ? We do also have such a marvelous power. We use this power in a very negligible way.
Successful people spent much time on what they want and how to focus it. They had clear goals in their mind that what they want to achieve. This made them to be successful in their life.
If you put a piece of paper in the sunlight, it will just get hot. But if you take a magnifying glass and concentrate all that sunlight into one spot, you will succeed in burning a hole in the paper and even creating fire - and all from the same amount of sunlight. The critical difference is focus - concentration of power. Once you have a goal, you can focus on it and channelise all the energy towards achieving it.

Then setting goals for your life is a necessary one.
Now, you have to identify what your goal is. You may ask, whether one can have more than one goal at a time. Yes, you can have more than one goal.
Decide, what you want in your life ? Healthy bank balance or Good academic fulfillment or good relationship or a big house. Everybody wants success in life. What is success ? What you mean by SUCCESS ? First define that. Then believe that you deserve success. You will also have to believe that you can achieve that success. It all depends what type of belief system you have. Believe it that you can achieve that success. Unless your belief system is strong, your goal will not have power to get achieved.
Goals can be set for different areas of life.
Career,
Family,
Financial,
Health,
Knowledge,
Wealth
Retirement, and
Spiritual
First set objectives in one or two areas. Then ask yourself, why you want this to be achieved. Reason out.
In studying goal setting, and the keys to success, it was discovered that many people fail to achieve success simply because they lack clear reasons for doing so. Don't let this hold up your success. Write as many reasons as you can. You can add more reasons while the days pass by. The more you write, more the power will be there for your goal. Do not show this to anybody What you feel important for you may be seem to be silly to others. Individual thinking and taste differ. You are unique. Your potentials are unique. Your capabilities are unique, definitely different from others.
In the morning, take out a paper and write down what are all you wanted to do. List it down. Even if the number goes to one hundred don’t worry. Let the ideas flow freely. Just list down. Some may be funny, some may be difficult, some may be very easy but kept pending for a long time. The desires should come out in the written form.
Next day, again take out a fresh paper. List out your wishes and desires. But don’t look into the yesterday’s paper. Go on writing. Some may be new. Some may be listed again.
Third day also continue this exercise. Some points may be new. Some are just continued.
If you do this for about ten to fifteen days, you will come to know that only certain wishes and desires are repeated all these days. Pick out those desires and goals which are repeated all the days or the majority of the days. Those are the real desires. You will see that your dreams are becoming your goals.
Then define the goal statement. You have to be more careful in defining the goal statement. Simple statements like “I want to become rich” or “I want to become a successful person” will not yield desired results. Just go through the statements often. Redefine it, if needed.
We can broadly classify that the goal statement should satisfy the following conditions:
We can call it as SMART.
S - Specific, Simple, Significant
M – Measurable
A – Achievable, Action oriented
R – Realistic, Reachable
T – Time bound
Apparently, you may think this is an easier one. We will look into these in detail in the next issue.
There has to be a definite purpose and goal if you are to progress. If you are not intent about what you are doing, you aren't able to resist the temptation to do something else that might be more fun at the moment." --Coach John Wooden
